Duration: 10 hours

Location: Cartago, Central Valley

Estimated Departure from San José: Between 06:00 A.M. – 07:00 A.M.

This excursion combines visits to the Irazú Volcano National Park, the Orosi Valley, and the Lankester Gardens, offering a chance to explore a stunning volcano, learn about significant historical and cultural landmarks, and appreciate beautiful plant life. The tour provides the mystical allure of the Irazú Volcano alongside the charm of Orosi's lush gardens.

Our journey will begin with a southward drive along the Panamerican Highway, heading toward the base of the mighty “Iztaru” (an indigenous village believed to have once stood on the slopes of the volcano, possibly inspiring the current name of Irazú Volcano).

As we wind our way through fertile lands, we’ll be surrounded by a wide variety of vegetation, with panoramic views of the hills and valleys. On clear days, the summit reveals a breathtaking view, where both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are visible.

Descending into Cartago, we’ll visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a renowned pilgrimage destination where countless believers make long, dedicated journeys to honor their faith. The Basilica is home to towering vaulted ceilings and stunning stained-glass windows—an experience not to be missed.

Following the Basilica, we’ll head to the Lankester Gardens, a research center of the University of Costa Rica, which conserves over 800 species of orchids, bromeliads, and many other plant species.

Our last stop will be the picturesque Orosi Valley, a region known for its unmatched natural beauty. Here, we’ll visit one of the few remaining colonial churches and enjoy a delicious traditional lunch at a local restaurant.
